Compression therapy could be a treatment option for decreasing oedema, swelling and other related conditions influencing the upper and lower limb (both arms and legs). These garments apply graduated compression (e.g. tighter at the ankle and less tight at the calf) to the limb to decrease swelling and control blood flow. An orthotists will assess, measure, and fit you with the specified grade, type, and size of compression garment.
Medical compression comes in 4 grades: Class 1 – Class 4. Depending on the condition and the seriousness thereof, the patient will be prescribed a certain class of medical compression. Class 1 is the lightest compression and is utilized to treat less serious conditions or to help with wound healing. Class 2 is the most commonly prescribed compression class and can be utilized to treat acute and chronic circulatory or endocrine conditions. Class 3 and 4 are utilized for more serious chronic conditions.
